Hills Like White Elephants

This story is set in Spain and the couple that is introduced to the reader are at a train station. They are discussing the issue of abortion over drinks. The man addressed as 'The American' does not want the woman Jig to have the baby however he constantly tells her that he wants her to be happy and will do whatever she wants to do. The woman's tone in this story suggests that she respects herself and is trying to make up her mind on this decision though she loves him and wants to keep the baby, their relationship seems strained and he does not want this period of fun and travel to end with the responsibility of caring for a child.
